Rail track reconstruction in the East - West rail corridor (2004-2010)

The project aims to replace physically worn and obsolete track superstructure materials with new ones to ensure:

  1. Safe movement of rolling stock in the Latvian territory;
  2. Safe transport of passengers and cargo;
  3. Increased protection of the environment;
  4. Prevention of train accidents due to faulty rail tracks;
  5. Decreased level of noise and vibration.

Under the project, 260.37 km of outdated and technically noncompliant rail track superstructure and 19 level crossings were reconstructed, including the placement of rubber covers on 19 level crossings in the following East-West rail corridor lines:

  • Zilupe - Rēzekne - Krustpils - Jelgava - Ventspils;
  • Indra - Daugavpils - Krustpils - Riga;
  • Kārsava - Rēzekne - Daugavpils.

To ensure the implementation of the project, 527,861.40 m of track, 481,000 sleepers with elastic fastenings, 312,000 m3 of chips, 455.22 m rubber covering was delivered.

Track renovation works included:

  1. Disassembly of the old rail track;
  2. Cleaning of the contaminated chip ballast layer;
  3. Profiling and compaction of the new ballast foundation;
  4. Rail track grid assembly;
  5. Replacement of the old rail track grid;
  6. Replacement of temporary rails with new long rails;
